SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCING PARTICIPATION IN CROP INSURANCE BY RICE FARMERS IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The study investigated the socio-economic factors that influence participation in crop insurance by rice farmers in Kano State. Primary data were used for the investigation. This involved the use of questionnaire instrument. Simple descriptive statistics and logit model were used for the analysis. The result revealed that 76.1% of the participants were classified as willing to continue to take rice insurance cover. The socio-economic factors that influenced rice farmers to take insurance cover were years of formal education (x2) and farm size (x3) which was significant at 10% and 5% level of probability respectively. Based on the findings, it was recommended that adult education be introduced in all local government areas where they do not yet exist and large holdings should be encouraged among the farmers.
